Farm to Family "Farm-Fresh" FACTS

All About Peaches

1. Peaches are a fat-free food and high in vitamin A, C and Potassium. (https://www.fatsecret.com/calories-nutrition/usda/peaches)

2. There are three types of peaches, 1) “Cling” peaches, where the pit is more firmly attached to the flesh. This type of peach is the most popular for commercial and processing uses and are the first types available in the Spring. 2) “Semi-Cling” peaches, when picked early and not ripe behave like a “Cling” but as they ripen will be easier to remove pit, but not as easy as the final type. 3) “Freestone” peach pits almost fall out when the peach is cut. This type of peach is generally the most popular for eating fresh and using at home. This type of peach are generally available after “Cling” peaches are finished (Mid to Late June in NC).

3. All peaches are “Hand-Harvested” due to bruising potential.

4. Peach flesh exists in three colors, yellow, white and less common red. In NC and the US, yellow fleshed peaches are the most common. Yellow fleshed peaches have a balanced flavor for sweet and tangy (slightly acid). Numerous white fleshed peach varieties exist in the US but are more common in Asian countries. White peaches have less acid and thus lack the tangy flavor of yellow peaches. “Georgia Belle” (or Belle of Georgia) is the popular older white peach most are familiar with.

5. Peaches are harvested in NC from late May through late August.

6. California produces over half of the peaches in the US, followed by South Carolina, Georgia and New Jersey. Almost all processed peaches (100%) come from California.

7. A mature peach tree, 3 weeks from harvest can use 35+ gallons of water a day.

8. A peach tree can yield up to 150 pounds or peaches but averages about 50 pounds/season.

9. There are over 700 varieties of peaches(& nectarines) in the world today. Each variety will mature and be harvested over a 2-week period and then another variety ripens. What’s your favorite variety?

10. It takes a peach tree 3 years (from planting) for the first commercial harvest and 3-5 months after flowering to mature and ripen.

11. Peach flavor does NOT improve after it is harvested but will soften. This is why LOCAL PEACHES are BEST and harvested at peak for maximum flavor. Ever tasted a grocery store peach that has been shipped across the country?
